    Different materials in Dimension SST

    Hi All,
Has anyone had any success using different materials in a Stratasys printer? I have successfully used HIPS as support without changing any temperatures. However I'm having a terrible time trying to get Nylon to work. It keeps gumming up the feed tube of the extruder, and then the feed roller feeds it in loops inside the head and I have to cut it off and back it out, clear the tube and try again. I've tried several different temperatures - mostly cooling the chamber, but nothing has worked.

One thing I'm wondering about is what Maraca is doing. It appears to allow me to set the model temperature to 210, but when I go into maintenance mode and run the head, it warms to 270. Are there different settings for printing and maintenance? Does Maraca not affect the maintenance temperature?

One other thing - cooling the chamber is a bear if the filament jams because the printer's firmware won't enter maintenance mode if the chamber is set to something less than 60. In order to feed material through the rollers, I have to reset the chamber to 60 with Maraca, reboot the machine, and then enter maintenance to clear the jam.

    Any tips?

As far as I know it's a melt flow problem. Stratasys uses mg94 for abs because of its high melt flow. I don't know if I've ever heard of them doing nylon. You may be abs to try polycarbonate though, as they have machines that use this.

I think you're definitely on to something. What happens is that I get extrusion for a while, but then the transition zone between melted plastic and solid plastic creeps toward the feed rollers. Eventually, the feed rollers are pushing solid plastic against melted plastic and it buckles and starts feeding the filament in a loop. The thermal conductivity of Nylon could be an issue too if it allows that melt zone to creep too far out of the heater.

It's just interesting to me because HIPS and literally every type of ABS I've tried works great!

You can change some other temperature settings in the file like mvcplr.cfg in /mariner/config/"your printer type" on the HD printer.
