    Increasing FDM printer resolution by adding a finer slice in Insight. UPrintSE+, ect.

    Hi, this post is a work in progress.
    Having used Eychei's tutorial on this forum [Link needed] and the information on Argyle Materials Blog [Link needed], I am able to use Insight 10.6 and Control center rather than the unfortunately limited catalyst software to post and manage print jobs to our UPrintSE+.

    This is wonderful.

    The next step im experimenting with and having little luck.
    Is to add 0.007 Slight heights to the options of 0.010 and 0.013 (units in IN)

    Exploring the printer .tcl file in my printers code folder. ( in this case molokai/Molokai.tcl )
    There is this line
    Code:
    proc	molokaiSlices { mainMaterial mainTip altMaterial altTip {request ""}} {
        if { $request == "-default" } {
    	return 0.010;
        } elseif { $request == "-limits" } {
    	return { 0.010 0.013 };
        }
        return { 0.010 0.013 };
    }; # molokaiSlices
    So time to try to figure out how to add a new option of thinner slices used in other printers.
    I added 0.007 to the list.

    1.
    Code:
    proc	molokaiSlices { mainMaterial mainTip altMaterial altTip {request ""}} {
        if { $request == "-default" } {
    	return 0.010;
        } elseif { $request == "-limits" } {
    	return { 0.007 0.010 0.013 };
        }
        return { 0.007 0.010 0.013 };
    }; # molokaiSlices
    2.
    For some printers, and in this case, There are folders for every slice setting in the modeler directory with a mvcplr2.cfg file. These folders and files control flow and printer properties. Every tip size, material, and slice has its own.

    a. Time to add a folder
    I Created a folder called slice7. Next to it are folders called slice 10, and slice13. Each have their own mvcplr2.cfg file within.
    I do not yet have a mvcplr2.cfg for 0.007 settings. My hope it to use one from a printer with a similar head and tip as my uprintSE+ or to create and tune my own using the mvcplr2.cfg file from slice10 as a starting point.
    for NOW, im just going to copy the mvcplr2.cfg from the kappa machine into my new folder.
    ( do any of you have any ideas or solutions ? )

    b.
    The Material DEF file has some limits within it.
    the files P430XLT16.def, and SR30XLT16.def

    Have some constraints that will cause an error. Changing from:

    Code:
    # Tip description
    setGlobal $matl:tip:size	.016;
    setGlobal $matl:tip:zMin	.010;
    setGlobal $matl:tip:zMax	.013;
    global $matl:tip:zMin;
    global $matl:tip:zMax;
    if { $sliceHeight < [set $matl:tip:zMin] ||
         $sliceHeight > [set $matl:tip:zMax] } {
        errormsg "Deffile: Slice height $sliceHeight is not valid for \
    	      $matl material/tip combination."
    }
    To

    Code:
    # Tip description
    setGlobal $matl:tip:size	.016;
    setGlobal $matl:tip:zMin	.005;
    setGlobal $matl:tip:zMax	.013;
    global $matl:tip:zMin;
    global $matl:tip:zMax;
    if { $sliceHeight < [set $matl:tip:zMin] ||
         $sliceHeight > [set $matl:tip:zMax] } {
        errormsg "Deffile: Slice height $sliceHeight is not valid for \
    	      $matl material/tip combination."
    }
    Thats all i can do know right now.
    Errors that happen.

    Error 1.
    In the configure modeler > slice height. You see all three slices . 7 10 13.
    the 10 slice works as far as i can tell.
    the 13 slice no longer works. I dont understand, it reports the max slice height allowed is .010. I made no changes that would restrict this.

    the .007 slice does not work, says that my tool path settings are wrong and has like 12 errors that pop on screen.

    Thank you !!!
    If you have any suggestions, please assist. I will share and post my findings.

    1. Your code is wrong

    proc molokaiSlices { mainMaterial mainTip altMaterial altTip {request ""}} {
    if { $request == "-default" } {
    return 0.010;
    } elseif { $request == "-limits" } {
    return { 0.007 0.010 0.013 };
    }
    return { 0.007 0.010 0.013 };
    }; # molokaiSlices

    These are the limits you have to write 0.007 0.013

    2. Copy the Slice10 folder and rename it to Slice7

    Now the timeestimator shouldnt have a problem.

    When slicing there will be errors about part and support widths. Go through all the settings in insight for Toolpath and change every width manually to one higher value.

    Thats it. Should all work now

    Thank you Eycei!

    This is what I changed in the .tcl file in my printers code folder. ( in this case molokai/Molokai.tcl )
    There is this line
    Code:

    Code:
    proc	molokaiSlices { mainMaterial mainTip altMaterial altTip {request ""}} {
        if { $request == "-default" } {
    	return 0.010;
        } elseif { $request == "-limits" } {
    	return { 0.007 0.013 };
        }
        return { 0.007 0.010 0.013 };
    }; # molokaiSlices
    This fixed one of the errors. The next step is to follow your advise on adjusting tool path widths.

    Dont forget to copy the Slice10 folder to Slice7 folder. Without this step you will get timeestimator errors.

    Yes, Created a copy of the Slice10 folder, and renamed the copy as Slice7.

    This was done in the first post:

    Is there any progress? I found on hackaday.io the info that someone was able to hack Catalystex to be able to choose 0,005" at Dimension SST.

    Does anyone know how to do this? I found nothing more in the web.

    Yeah it doesn't work for me. Insight just throws a bunch of errors and if I brute force it, my HP Designjet Color (Uprint Plus) errors out just before printing.
    I thought it had something to do with the DEF files which contain some print parameters. Replacing these files (P430T16 and SR30T16) with the ones from the Fortus 250mc didn't do the trick either. There seems to be some kind of internal hard limit.
