How do I get a smooth bottom layer without heated bed

So, I'm new to 3D printing and am wondering what I can do to have my first layer (bottom layer) come out as smooth as the last. I'm using a printer without a heated bed. Are there changes that I can make to the first layer (temperature, thickness, etc...) that would give the results that I'm looking for?

    Thanks in advance
