    Basic question ...

Is there a "3D Printers for Dummies"? I'm interested in exploring potential applications and knowing which software packages support it.

The "3d Printing for Dummies" is a great resource for people trying to get into the hobby. I was the technical editor for it as can tell you it is very good. I don't know if you have ever looked at Reprap.org but it basically takes all the information on that website and compiles it into 380 or so pages. Like I mentioned another good resource is Reprap.org

I was mulling over the same query. Glad to read that they still publish books for people with a thirst for learning.

Check out The RepRap project Wiki (search Reprap in Google) it is a good place to start if you are new to 3D printing and explains the different parts to any 3D printing system. cheaper than a book, book's! they still print books! ;-)

The reprap wiki is a great resource. The only downside is the loads of information that needs to be sifted through to get what you are looking for.

I have learned a lot by reading the manuals for printers. The Lulzbot printer manual taught me a lot and led me to more questions that I would not have known about. I second the info from MAKE has been valuable as well. They have a 3D printer guide.
