Is it possible to 3D print metal springs

I was wondering if it is possible to 3D print metal springs that have the same characteristics of manufactured springs and if not is there a proven plastic alternative that will work in the cold?

That is very doubtful. What scale are you talking about?

That depends on what you mean by "The same characteristics" if you mean have the same spring rate, volume and fatigue life. No is the answer with all current printing methods and materials. If you mean spring rate and fatigue life. Maybe depending on the process and design constrants. If you have a short life and lots of volume a spring that is 3d printed could be designed. If all you need is spring rate then yes a 3d printed spring is possible. It would likely fail quickly if all you need is a single cycle like a snap feature should be no problem with the right design.

It's a little bit tricky to print could you describe the scale you talking about?
